Daisy Jones and the Six, the limited series based on Taylor Jenkins Reids novel of the same name, released three more episodes on Friday. If you haven't go check out Shannon and Julie's recap of episodes 1-3 to catch up! Now, here is what we thought about episodes 4,5, and 6.
General Takeaways:
Shannon: These three episodes were all about Karen and Graham to me. I love them so much and care about their relationship more than I do Daisy and Billy or Camilla and Billy, so finally getting to see them be happy before all of their turmoil made my cold heart melt. I also really enjoyed getting to see the writing and recording process brought to life. Getting to see the full band start to mesh and Daisy kind of assert her dominance with Billy and make sure she’s heard gave depth to Daisy’s character that we needed after the first three episodes.
Julie: I love that this started out with all the band members hearing their song on the radio and realizing that people liked it. The validation in that and the excitement of knowing that you’re on an upward trajectory really sets the tone for this group of episodes. I like that we see the writing process here, the difficulties it takes to actually write a good song and the feeling of accomplishment when they do. I also loved their festival set, with Daisy storming onstage at the wrong time. This shows her and Billy’s dynamic without even needing to say anything else about it; the tumultuous push and pull that their relationship will always be. It’s so juicy!
What We’re Most Excited For Going Ahead:
Shannon: The tour!!!! Give me all the drama. I am just waiting for the chaos of Daisy falling off the edge, Karen and Graham’s situation (trying to keep it spoiler free), tensions rising, band breaking up… I can not wait!!
Julie: The promos for the next few episodes look amazing. I’m so looking forward to seeing them perform the songs they’ve written and to bond/fall apart as a band. I’m also really interested to see how the future timeline progresses – will we learn anything about what the band members are doing now?
Changes From The Book (Good or Bad):
Shannon: I think I said this out loud when Julie and I were watching, but in the show, Billy seems so much more masochistic than he did to me in the book. That moment where he's watching Daisy sing More Fun To Miss with that sinister grin on his face knowing that he just cheated on his wife and manipulated Daisy into singing this song was just… scary honestly. Sam Claflin nailed that scene. I also find Billy so much more, in a way, annoying in the series than I did the book. Not in a way that I am annoyed with his character or the writing, but I catch myself thinking or saying, “Oh my god this guy is such a prick,” in a way I think I didn’t get from the novel. Both of these things make me wonder if they’re intentionally making Billy more sinister than Taylor Jenkins Reid did in the novel. Also, the obvious change of Eddie and Camilla. I am excited to see where that leads and how that further drives a wedge between Eddie and Billy. I know some people don’t like this new storyline – Camilla also cheating on Billy – but I actually am a fan. Camilla didn’t have to be this perfect angel who sat beside her drug addict husband while he fell in love with another woman! Let women make the same mistakes you let men get away with! If she enjoys being with Eddie and Eddie is good to her, let her be with (and maybe leave Billy for) him! I have one bad change (to me) to note here: Karen and Graham getting together for the first time where she calls him and runs to go be with her was perfection. And while I did like what they did in the show, I still missed that sweet, perfect moment from the book.
Julie: One thing about me is I read this book in the year 2020, so I don’t really remember all that much in terms of plot details, just a general vibe. I feel like Daisy, at this point in the book, is a bit more of a mess than we’re seeing in the show. She still feels a little curated to me, even though I love her character, but I want to see her get messy in the way that we’ve seen Billy get messy. I’m loving Karen and Graham, and to be honest I don’t really remember how they end up (?) so I’m rooting for them to at least turn out well, since this is an adaptation and they can do what they want! While the pacing is stellar, I do wish we could see more from the perspective of the “lesser” band members. Part of the fun of the book is that we hear from everyone, even seemingly peripheral figures, and that factors into how we see the key events transpire. Personally, as a Warren fan, I would like to see more of him!
